Das Boot comes across as cold and distant, but the work of Wolfgang Petersen is nevertheless rigorous and skillful, the actors are effective, and the camerawork is risky. Of course we had far better living conditions, but you get into that cycle of go on watch, eat sleep get up and go on watch and that seems to be what your life becomes. The last time I watched this film was exactly 12 years ago on a DVD that only included the director’s cut. Watching the German version with subtitles is by far the best, the English dub is distracting. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses.
